1 out of 5This review PAINS me to write. In my beautiful town of Whitefish, you want to expect better from your neighborhood café. But I can’t lie to you; This was a true one out of five.
Let’s start with the obvious: the presentation. This was not it. One slab of Canadian bacon carelessly thrown across two pieces of English muffin… NO! I should mention that I have eaten this classic eggs Benedict at the Buffalo Café many times before, and today’s showing was, quite frankly, appalling. The egg yolk had a nice run to it, I’ll give them that! But the hollandaise sauce? I was confused because it had the consistency of egg yolk, and, I should mention, completely lacked flavor. Zero points here. Sure, the English muffin was fine. But the redeeming quality of a classic eggs Benedict will never be the English muffin. I don’t make the rules. This is simply how it is. I'll be back because this is 1 of 3 breakfast spots in town, and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a better performance.

3 out of 5I'd like to start by sharing that this eggs benedict was $19, so my expectations were high.
The hollandaise was VERY buttery, but there was a lot of it, which I appreciate. Sauce texture was good, but again, the butter was the overpowering flavor in the sauce, which isn't correct. Next, we have the basted egg. It would have been better if it was poached, but I really didn’t mind this remix as much as I thought I would. The egg white to yolk ratio was off, but it didn't ruin the experience. However, I will note that I much prefer an eggs benedict that is constructed individually, rather than have this 2-egg-set-up played out over 2 different English muffins... so, point docked. Obligatory side dish mention: Basic potatoes on the side. They were crispy, which was enjoyable. 2 out of 5Friends, I was so ravenous this particular morning that I didn’t even stop to take a picture of this Benedict before eating. My deepest apologies, but I’ll do my best to paint the picture (& I found a picture off Yelp that matched my experience).
It was a Wednesday afternoon, around 12:30 PM. My group of 3 had no wait, but please be aware that the wait for this particular restaurant can sometimes be up to an hour and a half at peak times (weekends)! We were quick to be waited on, and while I, of course, knew what I was going to have, my friends seemed to feel rushed by the waiter to place their order. The food took about 15 minutes to come out, and the presentation was so-so. Standard two Eggs Benedict with very plain looking house potatoes on the side. The potatoes barely had any seasoning! Anyways, that’s not what we’re here for. What struck me immediately was how small the poached eggs looked and how thin the hollandaise sauce was. We’re not off to a good start folks! As I mentioned, I immediately dig in! Picture this looking something like digging in to an overdone steak using a butter knife. It wasn’t a good look. The English muffin was so thick and so hard, that I was wishing I had a steak knife! This is not an exaggeration. To add insult to injury, the ratio was totally off, and I ran out of egg so that I was unable to finish my eggs Benedict with the perfect sauce, eggs, ham, muffin ratio. Maybe they were feeling off their game this Wednesday, but I left feeling unimpressed. This Eggs Benedict wasn’t worth waiting 15 minutes for, and it sure as hell isn’t worth waiting an hour & a half for! On to the next! |
